Julia Sturtevant Tuttle was the original owner of the land upon which Miami, Florida, was built. Thus, she is described as the "Mother of Miami." She also has the honor of being the only woman to found a major American city.
In 1890, four years after the death of her husband Fredrick Tuttle she moved from Cleveland, OH to Biscayne Bay, FL to take ownership to land owned by her deceased father. She used funds from her parents estate to purchase the 640 acre James Egan grant, which was to be developed, with her leadership, into the present day City of Miami.
A 10' high bronze statue of Julia Sturtevant Tuttle, located at the south eastern end of Bayfront Park. It was created by sculptor Rob Firmin and unveiled on July 28, 2010. Julia Tuttle is shown wearing a floor length dress, a waistcoat, and a high collar. She his carrying a tray of oranges in her left hand and holding an orange in her outstretched tight hand.
