The church is surrounded by a wall of birch, beech, oak and alder, which summers form a green hedge. In 1362 was "Coldervene" mentioned in a charter. The congregation is a fork of the St. Clement Church in Steenwijk. Early fifteenth century granted the bishop of Utrecht parishioners permission to build a church here. Not only for the residents of Kolderveen but also for the residents of Dinxterveen, now a part of Wanneperveen (Overijssel). According to legend, the first church would have been at the Zomerdijk in Meppel.

In peatlands however churches were often moved simultaneously with the settlements. The old chapel was demolished and the parts were transported by wagons to Kolderveen. Shortly before they reached their destination tripped one of the horses and broke a leg. The axis of the vehicle also broke with a bang came the building to the ground. The fierce startled peasants saw this as "a sign from God." Here the church was to be built. The present church was built on a natural elevation of sand surrounded by a layer of peat. A 300 meter long beech avenue connects the church with the village Kolderveen. This beech avenue was constructed from the estate of Thijs van Urk, who died at age on March 21, 1890. The narrow lancet windows of the church attract attention. Saddleback will have been previously covered with slate. Regularly these pieces are found in the cemetery.
