Alexandrina Victoria was born on the 24th May 1819. She was Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain from 20 June 1837 until her death on the 22nd January 1901.
She reigned for 63 years, a period longer than any other female monarch in history and which became known as the Victorian era.
The statue was designed by local resident Clement Nash. Melbourne sculptor John Swan Davie then modelled the statue in clay. A bronze cast was made by Parlanti in London and sent to Geelong. It was unveiled on the 24th May 1904, the late queen’s birthday.
The statue was originally erected in Market Square in Geelong's CBD in 1904 and then relocated to Eastern Park in 1912.
The plinth is inscribed with "Victoria Queen and Empress 1837–1901. An Empire on which the sun never sets".
