As described by the NGS in 1973:
"1.0 MI W FROM AUSTIN.
ABOUT 0.3 MILES SOUTH SOUTHWEST ALONG LAMAR BLVD FROM THE SOUTH END OF A CONCRETE BRIDGE OVER THE COLORADO RIVER AT AUSTIN THENCE 0.7 MILES NORTHWEST ALONG RANCH ROAD 2244 THE BARTON SPRINGS ROAD, THENCE 0.1 MILES NORTHEAST ACROSS AND OPEN AREA OF ZILKER PARK TO A PROMINENT 22 FOOT BY 160 FEET ROCK FORMATION SURROUNDED BY SCATTERED TREES, 0.15 MILES EAST OF STRUTFORD DRIVE, 75.0 FEET WEST OF THE EAST END OF THE ROCK FORMATION, 83.0 FEET EAST OF A 3.0 FOOT SQUARE METAL METER BOX, SET IN TOP OF THE SOUTH EDGE OF A LIMESTON ROCK FORMATION, 3.5 FEET ABOVE THE GROUND. NOTE-- 0.2 MILES NORTHEAST OF THE BENCH MARK OUTCROP N 804."
The 1973 description and associated reference points (i.e. distances/directions) are still good references for locating this station, but a few minor corrections might be in order:
* "RANCH ROAD 2244" is now just called "Barton Springs Road"; both references to the old name should be ignored.
* "STRUTFORD DRIVE" is misspelled: it is "Stratford Drive"
All other references and associated distances -- including "N 804", which is also a waymark: "
WMNQ5K" -- are correct.
Its associated NGS Data Sheet's posted coordinates are about 11 ft off from my own observations: the NGS reports the station at "N 30 16 03.81 W 097 46 04.50" which was somewhat a little off from my own readings -- as measured within 10' accuracy and 20+ reading averages: "N 30° 16.065 W 097° 46.076".
The station was recovered in "fair" (not "good") condition: The disk and setting are fine, but the markings have faded somewhat due to scratches. See posted waymark's gallery images for BM close-up and setting details; some additional pictures are also available on the
