The cornerstone for this church was laid in 1877 by Alexander MacKenzie, then Prime Minister of Canada. Unlike most stone laying, this one was not just ceremonial. Mr. MacKenzie was an expert stonemason. So, instead of the ceremonial trowel, he took off his coat, took a workman's tool and laid the cornerstone himself. This church became the Prime Minister's place of worship when he was in Ottawa.
The first service took place on September 29, 1878 and has been in continuous use since that day. The exterior of the church has remained unchanged but the interior was re-oriented in 1928.
