In Canton, near the Ponkapoag Golf Course, was the site of a dramatic roof collapse at the Metropolis ice hockey ring.

The following is taken from the article by the New England Cable News (NECN):

'At 7 a.m., the team had just started practicing inside when the coaches heard loud, unusual noises coming from above.

"Heard a second snap and started screaming - we knew something was so wrong," said Coach Chris Sharkey.

"I immediately started screaming to get off the ice," said Fanizzi. "I just knew that wasn't a natural sound."

That split-second decision saved lives.

...

Even though the collapse happened at the other end of the rink, the force of it blew out a wall, creating even more damage.

Firefighters say heavy snow on the roof brought it down.'

The time of the visit was that afternoon after the event. The rink building was blocked off by metal partitions. The rink is a simple building, and is near the intersection of Turnpike and Washington Streets. The rink is visible from the intersection. The entrance to the parking lot it just north of the intersection, around the Neponset River Watershed Association Headquarters. The end facing the parking lot shows the damage done from the wind generated from the roof collapse. The roof damage is at the other end, which, at the time, was harder to access. Now (spring), though the barricades are still there, it's a little easier to walk either along the road (careful - it's a busy road) or on the golf course.

This was probably the most dramatic event of the long winter in New England. Though it wasn't the first roof to collapse, it was oe of the most noted since it involved a group of people in the building. This past winter will be remembered not as much for the ferocity of the winter as for the relentless accumulations of snow that did not allow for proper removal off roofs, sidewalks, and just about any other item. It wasn't the coldest winter, but it was solidly cold that didn't allow the snow to melt between accumulations. In many ways, damage and danger could have been much worse if there was a sudden warm up or rain were to fall in the snow.

Back in Canton, the rink remains in damaged condition, awaiting reconstruction.
