Depicted Renaissance-Baroque-Classicit burgher house N° 42 is one of several valuable historic houses surrounding main public space of town Kostelec nad Cernými lesy - Námestí Smirických (Square of Smirický').

Burgher house N° 42 was built probably in the beginning of the 16th century, but the first written record is from March 22, 1559, when Jan Vrtal sold this house to Tomáš Sládek. The new owner subsequently sold it (1560) to Jíra Zahradník, who is also confirmed as owner in Kostelec urbarium in 1564. During the 17th century was house known under names "Vozáblovský" and later "Skálovský". Damagaed badly by fires in 1716 and 1721, house was subsequently rebuilt in the Baroque style. Current building' appearance is a result of the last principal Classicist reshaping after great town's fire in May 28, 1814 (the southern stone entrance portal it from that year). During this rebuilding were two adjacent houses (N° 42 and N° 43) covered by one roof. The last (minor) structural change is dated 1919, when were removed shop doors. Nowadays it serves as a residential building and also houses pharmacy.
