The memorial consists of an abstract steel sculpture that is approximately 15 feet tall and sits in the center of a compass rose composed of cobblestones. The sculpture and compass rose were designed by Florida State College art professors Michael Cottrell and Patrick Miko, respectively.
A plaque at the base of the sculpture reads:
POINTS OF HOPE
Dedicated Friday, September 9, 2011 in
remembrance of the events of September 11, 2001
and the individual and collective courage, dignity,
and spirit of hope which arose from the ruins of a
National catastrophe. Those who pass by this place
will recognize that higher education, like a compass,
has always helped chart a course for a future filled
with hope and a collective understanding of our
responsibility for serving others.
(Plaza Design - Prof. Patrick Mike, Sculptor - Prof. Michael Cottrell)
Another plaque in the plaza provides a quote from an Emily Dickinson poem and reads:
Hope is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul.
And sings the tune
Without the words,
And never stops at all.
Emily Dickinson
U.S. Poet (1830-1886)
