"Die doppelschalige Kuppel der Basilika St. Peter ist das größte freitragende Ziegelbauwerk der Welt. Sie hat einen Durchmesser von 42,34 m (86 cm weniger als das Pantheon, ist aber mit 43,20 m höher) und wird von vier fünfeckigen Pfeilern mit einer großen Diagonale von je 24 m getragen. Im inneren Kuppelfries steht in zwei Meter hohen Buchstaben der nur im Matthäus-Evangelium (Mt 16,18 EU) überlieferte Auftrag Jesu an den Jünger Petrus: Tu es Petrus et super hanc petram aedificabo ecclesiam meam et tibi dabo claves regni caelorum (Du bist Petrus [latinisiert von griechisch pet??? petros: der Fels], und auf diesen Felsen werde ich meine Kirche bauen, und Dir werde ich die Schlüssel zum Himmelreich geben.). Die Laterne über der Kuppel ist auf über 510 Stufen zu erreichen, die mit einem Lift zur Dachterrasse abgekürzt werden können (nur noch 320 Stufen). Sie bietet einen hervorragenden Panoramablick auf den vatikanischen Hügel, den Petersplatz und das umgebende Rom.
