The reverse side of this 2 Euro coin depicts key historic landmark of Hanseatic city Lübeck - a brick late Gothic city gate Holstentor ("Holsten Gate"). The Holsten Gate consists of two round towers at the north and the south side with an arched entranceway between them. The building is four stories high. The fortified gate is the landmark of Lübeck, which is symbol not only of the well-fortified medieval town but also of the self-confidence of the former Queen of the Hanseatic League.

Built in 1464, from its beginnings the Holstentor served both Lübeck's defence and its prestige - a massive double-towered city gate. Above the round-arched gateway entrance is the Latin inscription in golden letters: CONCORDIA DOMI FORIS PAX (unity at home and peace abroad). The monument as we see it today is the result of considerable restoration work: in the mid 19th century it was more or less a ruin. In 1863, with a majority of just one single vote, the city parliament decided to restore the gate and began with ‘rescue works', the last of which were carried out from 2004-2006.

Today the museum houses a presentation dedicated to the life and work of a Lübeck merchant in the late Middle Ages and early modern times. The merchant left its mark on the city's economic, cultural and social life. The exhibition is part of a larger project, developed and presented by the federal states of Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern named "Kiln-fired Giants. Development of Brick Gothic". The exhibition is on display at the Holstentor Museum on a permanent basis.
