After planning a trip on the Thames, the narrator in Jerome K. Jerome's 1889 novel "Three Men in a Boat", and two of his friends decide to take a boat trip on the Upper Thames. They gather provisions in London and two of them head to Waterloo Station in order to take the train to Kingston. They meet up with the third man, George, later on. They are accompanied by the narrator's dog, Montmorency. However, they are not able to find the right train however they offer a trainman a bribe to take them on a different train.
