This plaque describes the national historic event of how Ottawa was chosen as Canada's National Capital. Toronto, Kingston, Montreal, and Quebec were all vying to be the capital. However, in 1857 Queen Victoria chose Bytown, at the time a small lumber town and the eastern terminus of the Rideau Canal. It was a good compromise in that Bytown was on the border of Upper and Lower Canada and relatively central to the vying communities.
