THE WAY IT WAS
A look-back at our town's past
Lewis Larsen, the Town's founder and major mover, was responsible for all of the Town's landmark buildings. The Pend Oreille Mine Office Bldg. (left) and the Pend Oreille Hotel (right), designed by Gustav Albin Pehrson, were the last.
The Office building was completed in 1929, but due [to] the stock market crash that October, the hotel was not completed until 1949 when the mine boomed and needed the housing. It was completed not as the grand hotel Larsen envisioned, but an apartment building--with the high first storey divided into two stories. Both of these buildings are almost completely original.
