In 1929, the Hays Regional Airport had but a gravel runway. The two level runway was 2,000 feet long and located on a pasture of the Fort Hays Experimental Station. 1937 saw a grassy land strip that was 4,000 foot by 150 foot. With the addition of more land, purchased in the 1960's the airport got it's first paved runway, a taxiway, and apron areas. In 1969 a VORTAC, a navigational aid, was added. 1988 saw a new terminal building. The main primary runway was expanded in 2001, and a crosswind run way in 2003. Today a total of 34 hangars are part of the airport; 24 privately owned and eight city-owned.
