Begin 12e eeuw wordt in opdracht van de bisschop van Utrecht het moerasgebied van Zuidwest Drenthe ontgonnen. Een zandophoping bij de Wold Aa dient als aanlegplaats. De plek wordt Bly Sté (= goede plek) genoemd. Al in 1152 krijgt de kerk, die op Bly Sté is gebouwd, bezittingen (hoeven en land). Aan het eind van de 12e eeuw zijn er in de omgeving meer boerderijen en nederzettinkjes ontstaan en wordt er op de verhoging langs de rivier een bakstenen kerkje gebouwd: Romaans, van grote gele kloostermoppen. De kerk wordt gewijd aan Maria Magdalena. Bly Sté staat intussen op de kaart als Blijdenstein.
De zuidmuur van de huidige kerk bevat nog diverse elementen van de romaanse kerk. Zoals:
- het muurwerk, bestaande uit de grote gele "kloostermoppen"
- één dunne steunbeer (hetgeen wijst op een houten zoldering)
- een dichtgemetselde rondbogig raam
- de (dichtgemetselde ) hagioscoop; het raampje waardoor mensen, die de kerk niet in mochten, toch een blik op het altaar werd gegund
- een rij kleine ronde boogjes, die de bovenrand van de muur versierden.
Early 12th century by order of the Bishop of Utrecht the wetlands of Southwest Drenthe were mined. A sand accumulation in the Wold Aa serves as a landingarea. The place is Bly Sté (= good place) called. Already in 1152 the church, which is built on Bly Sté, gets possessions (farms and country). At the end of the 12th century there arose more farms and small villages in the area and there is a brick church built on the platform along the river: Romanesque, of large yellow monastery stones. The church is dedicated to Mary Magdalene. Bly Sté is now on the map as Blijdenstein.
The south wall of the church contains various elements of the Romanesque church. Such As:
- the masonry, consisting of the big yellow "monastery stones"
- one thin buttress (indicating a wooden ceiling)
- a bricked arched window
- the (bricked) hagioscope; the window through which people who were not allowed inside the church were able to still get a glance at the altar
- a row of small round arches which adorned the upper edge of the wall.
