The episode starts with a flash back to the discovery of racing driver Duncan Palmer in a vintage racing car in a barn near to Darnley Park girls school. Since then Jones has restored the car to its former glory. Jones and Barnaby are invited to a classic car ralley at the school by the headmistress, Harriet Wingate.
Darnley School is deep in debt and there are moves by the governors to make the school go into the state sector to rid its debts. One governor, Jamie Cameron, is very keen on the idea. Cameron has a daughter Charlotte at the school, who is involved in drugs dealing, supplied by her mother Kate. Kate’s father, racing driver Peter Fossett is to be the judge of the car rally. Much to Fossett’s annoyance the other judge is DJ Dave, “Doggy”, Day, who knows nothing about cars. Jamie is having an affair with Jessica, Harriet’s daughter.
Dave Day is befriended by Kate and told to meet her at 11 o-clock, if he can get her car started. Dave starts the car, but is murdered when someone puts the car in gear and skewers him on the starting handle. Some time later Thomas Brightwell, a lad from the local estate who is connected to Charlotte in the drugs dealing, is found murdered in his classic car.
Barnaby eventually works out that the current murders are related to the murders of Duncan Palmer. He correctly surmises that Kate is not Peter Fossett’s daughter, but Duncan’s. In a tense final Barnaby confronts Fossett in the barn where Palmer died. Fossett knock Barnaby out and trusses him up in the barn above the spikes of a plough. Fortunately Jones arrives just in time to save Barnaby.
