The Chetthams used to live at Chetthams Park House, but now Jack Filby does. However, Freddy Chettham, the son of the family, is personal assistant to Jack Filby and will inherit the Park from Jack Filby. Filby, William and Isabel Chattham, Hugo Greening, antique dealer, Richard Lovell, Chief Constable, and David Roper, biographer were all at university together.

Jack Filby holds a dinner party for Freddy and David Roper arrives as a guest. The guests are appalled when Roper says that he is going to write a biography of the university set, then and now. Later that evening Roper is found assaulted in the grounds of the house. The next morning he is found dead.

As well as the murder Barnaby is investigating a burglar known as the Creeper. The Creeper has burgled both Filby and the Chetthams, and later burgles the Chief Constable and Barnaby. At Barnaby’s house the Creeper leaves some photographs, taken from Filby, Chatthams and the Chief Constable, with the word Fake written across them. Barnaby works out who the Creeper is, Tallis Filby, and warns her off.

Interested in the Fake pictures, Barnaby takes them to Hugo Greening. Greening tells Barnaby that Isabel Chettham and Jack Filby had an affair and that Freddy is probably Filby’s son. Unfortunately things are not that simple. The family Doctor, Dr Goring is found shot dead. On searching some records that Dr Goring had shredded, Barnaby realises that Freddy’s father is in fact a dead gangster that Roper wrote a biography about. Dr Goring and Roper knew this and were killed. It is a short step for Barnaby to work out that Isabel is the murderer.
