There is a cult, The Temple of Thoth, in Midsomer. The cult is led by Ernest Balliol, a man who runs a shop selling magical paraphernalia with his daughter Isolde. A former friend of Ernest’s, Aloysius Wilmington has written a book claiming that Wilmington created the cult. The two fell out over this some time ago. Ernest believes that there is a medieval book in Aloysius’s library that will prove the cult to have real roots.
A children’s magic show is put on in the village hall. Jean Wildacre, on of the cult’s members, is the magician’s assistant. She steps into a cabinet that has knives inside as part of a trick. On this occasion the knives do not retract and Jean is killed. The autopsy shows that the tips of the knives had the venom from a deadly South American tree frog on them.
Aloysius’s nephew, Simon, is cataloguing Aloysius’s library, and also selling on rare books to pay off his debts. Isolde is pestering Simon over the missing book on the Temple of Thoth. Simon does find some medieval documents. Simon shows the documents to Hugo Cartwright, the antiquarian book dealer and cult member. Later Hugo is also killed by frog venom. Suspicion turns to Aloysius, but he in turn is killed by the venom of a tree frog.
Barnaby deduces that the murders are connected to the members of the Temple of Thoth and arrives in time to stop Ernest from being murdered by his son Tristan. Tristan Balliol is caring for Ernest’s first wife, Rosemary. Rosemary had been initiated into the Temple of Thoth and it had mentally unhinged her. Tristan was seeking revenge on the cult.
