An old lady, Felicity Law, claims to have discovered a painting in her attic. The painting turns out to be a Hogson, Bishop’s Drift, and fetches £400,000 at auction. The bidders are the secretary of the Hogson society, Patricia Blackshaw, local businessman, Alan Best, and Hogson collector George Arlington. Arlington wins the painting, despite strong offers from the other two and objections that Patricia Blackshaw does not have enough funds.

The day after the auction Felicity Law is found tortured and murdered. Some time later Alan Best’s Hogson painting, Midsomer Meadow, is stolen. Barnaby turns art critic and finds out that Bishop’s Drift and Midsomer Meadow are both forgeries due to elements in the painting being developments after Hogson’s death. The painting Midsomer Meadow is traced to dodgy art dealer Anthony Prideaux, who claims local villain, Graham Spate has the painting. Spate is found tortured and murdered with the painting by his side.

Barnaby turns his attention to the beneficiary of Felicit Law’s will, the Arnold Simms School of Art. Matilda Simms confesses that the forgeries are the work of her late father. He ahad introduced bogus elements into the pictures and they are recorded in a black book that is missing. It becomes apparent that the murders are connected with the black book. Prideaux is later found dead. A note is received by Arlington demanding £2 million for the black book. Arlington tells Barnaby that Prideaux had been trying to blackmail him over the forgeries. Barnaby convinces Arlington to take the money to the rendezvous at the local library. The sting does not work out, however, and Patricia Blackshaw makes off with the money. Barnaby manages to stop and arrest her for the murders at the airport .
