Towards the end of the Commonwealth King Charles II and some of his cavaliers make a sortie into England to assess the mood of the populace. Whilst in England the King gives his ring to one of his supporters, Lord Lucius Vyne, telling him that if he is ever in trouble to send the ring to him.
Lucius’s cousin, Lady Panthea Vyne, I stricked into marrying a tax collector, Drysdale, who promises to save her brother Richard from execution. Just after the marriage the couple are way laid by highwaymen, led by Silver Blade. Silver Blade is Lucius in disguise. He informs Panthea that her brother is already dead. Drysdale decides to duel with Silver Blade, and is killed by Silver Blade.
Panthea’s aunt, Lady Emma Darlington, invites Panthea to the King’s court to be a lady of the Queen’s bed chamber. Panthea’s popularity at court causes resentment from the King’s mistress, Lady Castlemaine. One of Lady Castlemaines friends is Rudolph, a cousin of Panthea. Rudolph wants to inherit Manston Hall, Panthea’s home and Lucius’s hiding place.
Lucius is working under cover for the king and is nearly captured, but for the intervention of Panthea. After the King leaves for France Lady Castlemaine seeks revenge on Panthea. She convinces her coachman to testify that Panthea murdered her husband. Panthea is taken to court and convicted of murder. Lucius rescues her from the court, but they are both caught. Lucius passes the King’s ring to Panthea’s maid, but Rudolph intervenes and takes the ring. On the day of his execution Lucius tricks his jailers and escapes. He rides to the Tower of London to rescue Panthea. He prevents Panthea’s execution, but is captured again.
Rudolph goes to the King and demands to be declared the Duke of Manston Hall. The King spys the ring and marches on the Tower of London to save the day. Lucius and Panthea are pardoned and marry.
