Nicholas Quinn was hard of hearing and worked for an examination syndicate. He is found dead at home from cyanide poisoning. Morse does not think it is suicide, but murder.
As he investigates he finds that the syndicate has been compromised and someone is selling exam results. Quinn had obviously deduced who the culprit was, and was killed because of it. In the end it is Quinn’s deafness that helps Morse solve the death. Just before Quinn’s death there had been a practice fire alarm. Quinn had not heard this, but it gave the killer the opportunity to kill Quinn and get his body out of the back of the building whilst all the staff where outside the front of the building.
