There is a cricket match at Midsomer Parva which requires an extra umpire. Barnaby is persuaded to be umpire to counteract the bias of the other umpire, Malcolm Frazer. Frazer and his son, Nicky and daughter in law Jenny are all ex spies, as is Barnaby and the captain of the opposing team, Jimmy Wells. Another ex spy, Geoffrey Larkin arrives and joins the cricket team.

Larkin threatens Frazer with a document entitled Wolfman. Larkin is later found murdered, apparently savaged by a wild animal. Nicky Frazer is also found, mauled the same way. Barnaby believes that the murders are connected to the time they were all in Berlin during the cold war. However, when he tries to investigate he is warned off by MI6, in the form of a spy called Brenda Packard.

Meanwhile Jones is sent to investigate a break in at Causton Museum. Nothing appears to have been stolen at first, but later an animal skull with large teeth is found to have gone missing from the store room. The skull is found later at the hut of the local shepherd, Seth Comfort. Seth denies murder and Barnaby believes him.

Barnaby manages to find out from Jimmy Wells that he and the Frazers were smuggling people out of East Berlin, but that they were betrayed by “Wolfman”, and Jimmy was captured. Barnaby correctly works out that Malcolm Frazer was Wolfman and that the murderer knew this.

Knowing that Jimmy is not the murderer, leaves only Malcolm and Jenny.
Malcolm Frazer has planned his own funeral and sits inside his coffin to see if it fits. Whilst in the coffin, Jenny fastens him in and drives him to the crematorium. Fortunately Barnaby and Jones are hot on her heals and manage to get to the crematorium and save Malcolm right at the last minute.
