Moonstone Ridge has an observatory that is shared by the local community and the University of Midsomer. One of the amateur astronomers, Jeremy Harper is killed by a blow to the head by a piece of meteorite. Later, another local astronomer, Peter Groves, is killed by a spear, and another, George Dormer is killed by a disc, the Moonstone disc, with astronomical symbols on it.

Barnaby finds red threads on the murder weapons linking the murders, There is great antagonism between the amateur and professional astronomers. There also seems to be a mystery surrounding the death of Catrina, the sister in law of Jeremy Harper and Harry Dutta, the local chemist. Harry Dutta’s daughter, Gagan is an astronomer studying for a PhD. There appears to be little love lost amongst the professional astronomers either. Lawrence Janson, the group leader, has plans to move the observatory and has rubbished Gagan’s thesis. He was at loggerheads with Jeremy Harper and Gagan’s tutor, and was also an expert decathlete.

In the end it appears that Gagan had discovered a new planet and shared the information with the amateur astronomers. Gagan’s tutor wanted the glory of the discovery for himself and had killed the amateur astronomers. Barnaby and Jones manage to intervene when the tutor kidnaps Gagan.
