A psychiatrist, Julian Worth is found dead at a psychiatric hospital. A fellow doctor, Josef Novak is a chess playing friend of Foyle. Worth was about to leave for a post at Cambridge based on a paper he had written. Foyle knows that Novak was angry with Worth for using confidential case notes of his in the paper.

In a separate strain to this story a local farmer, Dawson, comes back from war to find a German POW, Schultz, working on his farm. He gets angry about Schiltz being there and asks for him to go back to the POW camp. This is done, but Schultz escapes. When the police look for Schultz they find him dead in a stream. A post mortem shows he was clubbed to death and didn’t drown.

Initially Dawson is suspected of murdering Schultz, but Foyle eventually deduces that Novak killed the German. He had just happened to come across Schultz on his way from hearing about his family in a concentration camp in Poland. The doctor, Worth, was not killed by Novak, but by another doctor, Campbell, who was being blackmailed bty Worth, who had discovered Campbell’s affair with the wife of a patient.
