John Ransom is killed in a pub brawl in Midsomer Mere. The autopsy shows that it wasn’t the brawl that killed him, but a blow to the back of the head. Barnaby and Scott investigate.
There are strange burn marks on John’s scalp and on the scalps of several other villagers. It turns out that John’s brother is experimenting with precognition using a Faraday cage and villagers as guinea pigs. Some time later John Ransom’s father, Geoffrey, is found electrocuted in the cage.
As the plot deepens it appears that there is a family rift between the Ransoms and the Kirkbys. Ben Kirkby is married to Emma, nee Ransom. They have a daughter Christine that needs a baptism. The Ransoms, as scientists, are opposed to the baptism, whilst the Kirkby’s are happy for the baptism to occur.
As an added bonus the vicar, Pete Kubatski, needs to have the baptism in order for his church to remain open. In a weak plot, that involves the Kirkby’s having precognitive powers, it turns out that the vicar is responsible for the murders.
