A friend of the Saint, Madge, has married an unsuccessful actor cum playwright, John Clarron. Early in the marriage Madge is injured when a plant pot falls on her. The Saint decides to combine a golfing trip with a visit to Madge.

He stays at the Ferry Inn and meets Adrienne Halberd a neighbour of Madge and an insurance investigator. Adrienne tells Simon that Clarron’s first two wives died in suspicious circumstances and were both heavily insured.

Because of Madge’s injury Clarron pretends to hire an irish cook. In reality he uses his acting skills to dress up as the irish cook. His plan is to leave Madge a stew for her supper, prepared by the cook, whilst he goes off to London. The stew will have rat poison in it. The cook will be blamed whilst Clarron establishes his alibi in London.

Simon becomes supicious after he gives Clarron a lift to the station, but does not see him come back by train. He gets back to Madge in time to save her and have Clarron arrested.
