Basil is trying to attract a better class of customer and has placed an advert in an upper class magazine. He has had an enquiry from Sir Richard and Lady Morris and expects them to arrive that evening. In the meantime Lord Melbury arrives and Basil goes out of his way to inculcate himself with him. Melbury exploits Basil’s wish to please by asking Basil to cash a cheque for two hundred pounds.

Polly is despatched to the bank to get the two hundred pounds. There she meets Danny Brown, a guest at the hotel, who reveals himself to be a policeman investigating a con man passing himself off as Lord Melbury.

Whilst Polly is away Melbury further cons Basil out of his collection of coins, claiming that he can have them valued for him. On Polly’s return she tells Basil of what Inspector Brown has said, but Basil refuses to listen. He is only convinced when he looks at Melbury’s valuables in the safe, which turn out to be bricks, not jewels.

Basil confronts Melbury and gives him a good kicking. Unfortunately Sir Richard and Lady Morris arrive during his tirade and walk straight out of the hotel.
