The combined War Memorial just off the road in the churchyard of St.Mary, Earl Stonham is fairly small, consisting of a slender octagonal column surmounted by a cross presenting as a mixture of Celtic and Botonnee. It's mounted on a three-step plinth on a large square base in a gravelled area surrounded by a post and chain fence.
The dedication and WWI names are on the road-facing three sides of the lower two steps of the plinth and read:
TO THE GLORY OF GOD
AND IN MEMORY OF THE MEN OF EARL STONHAM
WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 - 1918
Wilfred S.Chaplin Charles Hubbard Henry Crowe
Harold Eric Gray William Brett Adolphus Kitson
Nathaniel Ringe Oliver J.Soames Frederick J. Last
Stanley Wilding Walter Peck Alfred W.Rush
Samuel Keen John Diaper Manley F.Ashwin
So They Passed Over and / Let the Trumpets Sound / For Them on the Other Side
The single WW11 name is on the left-hand, bottom-most step of the octagon reading:
1939 - 1945
Basil Charles West
Apart from the road running past this is a quiet spot, a suitable memorial place for the families who lost loved ones in the two world wars.
