Vancouver Island University's Cowichan Campus building was completed in June 2011. The building was registered for LEED certification on May 5, 2010 and received LEED Gold certification on April 15, 2013 under the LEED Canada for New Construction and Major Renovations rating system. Some of the sustainable features of the building include permeable parking lot surfaces, bioswales, eight cisterns to collect rainwater, a GeoExchange heating and cooling system, solar water heating panels, ultra low flow plumbing fixtures, electric vehicle charging stations, and a green roof covering 90% of the building.
