The Colville Forest Reserve, originally 700,000 acres in size, was created on 1 March, 1907 by President Theodore Roosevelt as part of 16 million acres of forest reserves set aside at that time.
The Newport Station is one of four which serve the Colville National Forest, the others being in Kettle Falls, Republic, and Metaline Falls, with the headquarters in Colville. The Colville National Forest today has 1.1 million acres in north eastern Washington and includes the Kettle River, Selkirk mountain ranges, and the upper reaches of the Columbia River.
The forest offers wild huckleberry picking, camping, 486 miles of hiking trails, OHV trails, mountain biking, horse trails, lakes, rivers, and streams. The forest also is home to many species of wildlife such as grizzly and black bears, cougars, bald eagles and the last remaining herd of caribou in the U.S. Some nearby attractions are the Little Pend Oreille National Wildlife Refuge and the Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area.
This station is open from 7:45 AM to 4:30 PM weekdays and is closed Saturdays and Sundays.
