This larger than life size bust of William Lisle Blenkinsopp Coulson sits on top of a drinking fountain and commemorates his campaigns for the protection of the weak and defenceless, both human and animals.

It was erected in 1914 in The Haymarket at a time when public drinking fountains were still common. A large trough on the front side was for horses, whilst at the rear was a smaller version for dogs.
It was moved to its current position on a hillside above the River Tyne when a major road was widened.
William Coulson was one of the first prominent people to support the Humanitarian League.
The bust was sculpted by M Arnold Rechberg and cast in the Alexis Roudier Foundry in Paris. The stone plinth has the following inscription on the front.

The rear of the plinth has a quotation from Coulson's work.
"WHAT IS REALLY NEEDED IS AN ALLROUND
EDUCATION OF THE HIGHER IMPULSES
TRUE MANLINESS, AND WOMANLINESS
JUSTICE, AND PITY.
TO TRY TO PROMOTE THESE HAS BEEN
MY HUMBLE BUT EARNEST ENDEAVOUR, AND UNTIL
THEY ARE ALMOST GENUINELY AROUSED,
THE LEGISLATURE IS USELESS,
FOR IT IS THE PEOPLE WHO MAKE THE LAWS"
