COTTEY  COLLEGE, northwest corner of W. Austin and S. Chestnut Sts., – is a privately endowed junior-college for girls. Grouped about the ornate administration building, a three-story, rambling red-brick structure (built 1884), are the four principal buildings of the ten-acre  campus. The school, established as Vernon Seminary by Virginia Alice Cottey in 1884, was chartered as Cottey College in 1887. Since 1927 the college has been owned and operated by the P.E.O. Sisterhood; it has an average enrollment of 125 students. - Missouri: A Guide to the "Show Me" State,1941, Tour 10, pg. 503.

Cottey College continues as a women's college and primarily as a junior-college however in recent years some four-year programs have been added. The college now has between 300 and 350 students and has 14 buildings. It continues to be owned and operated by the P.E.O. Sisterhood.
