EN: The Arboretum in Zürich is a park of 43'360 m2 on the shores of Lake Zürich. It was built on landfills that were created during the construction of quays 1883-1887. Originally a conventional park was planned, but short before construction start a group of botany and geology professors made some expansion proposals.

So, exotic trees, a rock collection and a panorama of the Alps were included in the system. After 1940, modifications Made the park increasingly deviate from the original concept. Since 1985, however, a slow return to the original structure is in progress.

The Tree collection consists of three segments, the largest covers the nine plant geographical districts: southern Switzerland, the Alps, the Jura, the Mediterranean and the Orient, the southern states of the USA, the Eastern states of the US and Canada, California, Japan and China. The structuring is not apparent on the spot, but all the trees are labeled.

At the edge of the park is also an aviary.

DE: Das Arboretum in Zürich ist eine Parkanlage von 43'360 m2 am Ufer des Zürichsees. Sie wurde auf den Aufschüttungen errichtet, die beim Bau der Quaianlagen 1883-1887 entstanden. Ursprünglich war ein konventioneller Park geplant, aber kurz vor Baubeginn wurde von einer Gruppe von Botanik- und Geologieprofessoren Erweiterungsvorschläge gemacht.

So wurden fremdländische Bäume, eine Gesteinssammlung und ein Alpenpanorama in die Anlage aufgenommen. Ab 1940 wurde bei Veränderungen der Anlage immer mehr vom Ursprungskonzept abgewichen. Seit 1985 ist aber eine langsame Rückkehr zur originalen Struktur im Gang.

Die Baumsammlung besteht aus drei Segmenten, wobei das grösste die neun pflanzengeografischen Florenbezirke Südschweiz, die Alpen, den Jura, das Mittelmeer und den Orient, die Südstaaten der USA, die Oststaaten der USA und Kanada, Kalifornien, Japan und China umfasst. Die Strukturierung ist vor Ort nicht ersichtlich, allerdings sind alle Bäume beschriftet.

Am Rand des Parks befindet sich noch eine Voliere.
