This mural shows the Ahnapee and Western Railroad which traveled through Algoma during the years when Algoma was known as Ahnapee. Dating back to the late 1800’s, the train was known as the shortest line from Winona, the Twin Cities, and the Atlantic Seaboard; its regular route included Kewaunee, Green Bay, Casco Junction, Algoma, and Sturgeon Bay. It carried passengers to and from resorts in Door County and cherries from the orchards. Passenger service ended after the depression, and the train transported German prisoners of war after World War II.
