The cavern started out as a mine and limestone quarry. During the Cold War, the cavern was to be used as a fallout shelter. Mining ceased in the 1970s - private investors re-opened the 4,000,000 square feet space into this mega roadside attraction.
Tram-guided Tour highlights include history, geology, mining, a stop at the Cavern worm farm (worms eat paper trash and poop fertilizer) and a drive through its underground atomic bomb shelter.
From November through December visitors can drive their own cars through Mega Cavern to see "Lights Under Louisville," a mile-long trail of Christmas lights in the world's only underground drive-thru holiday light show.
Mega Zips is six underground zip lines, including a dual racing zip and two challenge bridges that will test your skill and balance. Mega Quest is a fully underground aerial ropes challenge course with courses for all ages and abilities and Mega Underground Bike Park is a one of a kind bike park, with over 320,000 square feet including 45 trails, Jump Lines, Pump Tracks, Dual Slalom, BMX, Cross Country and Single Tracks.
It is so warm and humid inside during winter there was an 8 inch snowfall outside the entrance as the warm humid air met the cold dry air outside while there was no snow anywhere else in Kentucky.
Admission is charged for each attraction:
Lights Under Louisville - $25.00 per car
