It was sculpted by Ron Robertson-Swann in 1978 for the Melbourne City Council.
It is an abstract, minimalist sculpture built of large thick flat polygonal sheets of prefabricated steel painted yellow. It is assembled such that it represents dynamic movement.
The sculpture has always been controversial. It was called "The Thing" and "Steelhenge" until the official name of "Vault" was decided in 1980. It was moved from City Square to Batman Park, and then to its current location at the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art in 2002.
