This Czechoslovak post stamp issued in 1988, from series devoted to contemporary Prague' fountains, depicts fountain at Carolinum (fontána u Karolina) in Prague' Old Town.
In the district of Carolinum university complex near to Old Town Square in the Prague centre we can find several fountains. The most impressive from them is large modern fountain in the front of Carolinum honorary courtyard. Fountain, designed by architects Jaroslav Fragner and Vincenc Makovský (...and made by sculptors Stanislav Hanzík and Josef Wagner) was installed here in 1975. Circular stone fountain with central water-jet is decorated by statues of three lions (symbol of the Czech state). Shallow basin is made from polished Hudcice granite and pedestals under lions, statued from dark Krištanov syenite, are from the same material.
