The decoration of British Telecom street side junction boxes is part of an initiative by Southwark Council in the Borough and Bankside areas. Funding from Borough & Bankside Community Council's "Cleaner Greener Safer" scheme is being used to make these boxes more attractive and to try and deter graffiti and fly posters.
The background colour is blue to represent the sea. On the front of the box, towards the left edge is a green image of the United Kingdom with a magnifying glass enlarging a portion of it that appears to be the River Thames. From the River Thames, a route is plotted across the ocean to an island in the bottom right corner of the box. Half way along the route is a sailing ship. A couple of sea creatures are included in the ocean. In the top right corner is a compass rose and the chart is criss-crossed by lines of latitude and longitude. O the top and end panels of the box are images of bananas that wrap over on to the edges of the front of the box. The box is against a low wall that is topped by railings and the back of the box has been left unadorned (see photos).
