Carter est né à Detroit, au Michigan, et a appris à jouer sous la tutelle de Donald Washington, devenant un membre de son ensemble de jazz des jeunes oiseaux Trane-Sco-NOW !! Comme un jeune homme, Carter a assisté à Blue Lake Beaux-Arts Camp, devenant ainsi le plus jeune membre du corps professoral au camp. Il a d'abord visité l'Europe (Scandinavie) avec la bande International de Jazz en 1985 à l'âge de 16 ans.

Le 31 mai 1988, à l'Institut des arts de Detroit (DIA), Carter a été un ajout de dernière minute pour artiste invité Lester Bowie, qui se transforma en une invitation à jouer avec son nouveau quintet (ancêtre de son New York Organ Ensemble) dans New York, qu'à la suite de Novembre à la défunte Carlos 1 club de jazz. Ce était essentiel dans la carrière de Carter, le mettant en contact avec le monde musical, et il déménage à New York deux ans plus tard. Il a joué un rôle important en tant qu'artiste interprète et enregistrement sur la scène jazz depuis la fin des années 1980, saxophones, flûte, et clarinettes.

Sur son album Chasin 'the Gypsy (2000), il a enregistré avec son cousin Regina Carter, un violoniste de jazz.

Carter a remporté bas critiques et des lecteurs Choice Prix du magazine Beat pour saxophone baryton plusieurs années de suite. Il a joué, tourné et joué sur les albums avec Lester Bowie, Julius Hemphill, Frank Lowe et l'Saxemble, Kathleen Battle, le World Saxophone Quartet, Cyrus Chestnut, Wynton Marsalis, Dee Dee Bridgewater et le Mingus Big Band



Carter was born in Detroit, Michigan, and learned to play under the tutelage of Donald Washington, becoming a member of his youth jazz ensemble Bird-Trane-Sco-NOW!! As a young man, Carter attended Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp, becoming the youngest faculty member at the camp. He first toured Europe (Scandinavia) with the International Jazz Band in 1985 at the age of 16.

On May 31, 1988, at the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA), Carter was a last-minute addition for guest artist Lester Bowie, which turned into an invitation to play with his new quintet (forerunner of his New York Organ Ensemble) in New York that following November at the now defunct Carlos 1 jazz club. This was pivotal in Carter's career, putting him in musical contact with the world, and he moved to New York two years later. He has been prominent as a performer and recording artist on the jazz scene since the late 1980s, playing saxophones, flute, and clarinets.

On his album Chasin' the Gypsy (2000), he recorded with his cousin Regina Carter, a jazz violinist.

Carter has won Down Beat magazine's Critics and Readers Choice award for baritone saxophone several years in a row. He has performed, toured and played on albums with Lester Bowie, Julius Hemphill, Frank Lowe & the Saxemble, Kathleen Battle, the World Saxophone Quartet, Cyrus Chestnut, Wynton Marsalis, Dee Dee Bridgewater and the Mingus Big Band
