Built in about 1912 or 1913 as the Annable Block, after its builder, one time Nelson mayor John E. Annable, the building is now known as Ward Street Place. The ground floor houses commercial/retail outlets, while the second floor is given over to low income housing. In 2012 a $2 million revitalization was undertaken. The second floor was converted to low income rental space in 2002 when the building was taken over by the
Nelson CARES Society.
When the building was renovated it received quite a bit of attention, with several newspaper articles on the building appearing in local newspapers. One, from the Nelson Star, is reproduced in part below.
