Charles John Gibb MD is immortalised in the Tyneside anthem 'Blaydon Races', a song about the horse racing event held on 9th June 1862.
Gibb was an eminent doctor and surgeon of his day. After serving an apprenticeship in his career, he spent time in the Infirmary of Newcastle upon Tyne. He travelled in Europe to further his medical knowledge, and this book chronicles some of his life and times, as well as providing information about the social medicine of the age.

Leaving the Infirmary in 1854 he commenced practice in Westgate Road and is said to have taken the Newcastle Infirmary with him. His name and site of his rooms is perpetuated in a suite of offices, next door to the Country Court, called “Gibb Chambers”.
His consultation fee for rich and poor alike was half-a-crown and his day’s takings he carried to his home in Sandyford Park in a leather bag!
