John Rodgers served in the Revolutionary War as a colonel. He was an entrepreneur and owned a tavern in Havre de Grace, Maryland. He also operated a lucrative ferry business across the Susquehanna River. He was married to Elizabeth Reynolds, the daughter of a prominent pastor of this church. They had nine children, five sons and four daughters. One of their sons, John, was instrumental in the foundation of the U.S. Navy. He became admiral and along with eight other descendents of John and Elizabeth who also became admirals in the Navy.
