The decoration of British Telecom street side junction boxes is part of an initiative by Southwark Council in the Borough and Bankside areas. Funding from Borough & Bankside Community Council's "Cleaner Greener Safer" scheme is being used to make these boxes more attractive and to try and deter graffiti and fly posters.
On one side of the box is an image of Canterbury Cathedral and on the opposite side is a picture of a knight in armour and other items that are assumed to relate to the Canterbury Tales.
