Hempnall is a village on the B1135 road from Bungay to Wymondham. John Wesley came here to preach in 1754 and recorded in his journal: 'The ring leader of the mob came with his horn, as usual, before I began, but one quickly catched and threw away his horn, and in a few minutes he was deserted by all his companions who were seriously attentive to the great truth. By grace ye are saved through faith: The occasion is shown on the village sign, which is a fine example of work produced by combined local effort and talent. It stands at the road junction near the church.
The text of the journal is recorded on a plaque just below the sign
