The statue was sculpted by Jan van der Furth in 1674–1676.
William of Maleval (or William the Great or Guillaume de Malavalle; died 10 February 1157) was the founder of the Catholic congregation of Williamites, a branch of the Hermits of St. Augustine. He was beatified in 1202.
Monumental Baroque Church of St. Thomas (Chrám Sv. Tomáše), the key architectonic element of Moravské námestí (Moravian Square), is one of the most important Catholic churches in Moravian metropolis Brno. The full name of the church is "chrám Zvestování Panny Marie a svatého Tomáše apoštola" (The church of the Annunciation of Virgin Mary and the St. Thomas the Apostle).
