The Rev Sidney Chambers officiates at a service for the suicide of Stephen Staunton. Not only is suicide is unpopular, but Staunton’s wife is German, in post war Britain. After the service Sidney is approached by Pamela Morton, the wife of Staunton’s business partner. She tells Sidney that she was the lover of Staunton and that she believes her husband murdered him.

Sidney goes to see Inspector Geordie Keating and tells him he believes the suicide to be murder. Keating doesn’t believe Sidney at first, but Sidney persists. He identifies that the bottle of scotch on Staunton’s desk was the wrong brand. Further, Sidney works out that the suicide note was not a suicide note, but a note breaking off a relationship. Sidney believes the key is in Staunton’s diary. Sidney manages to steal it from Staunton’s widow.

Sidney and Keating operate a sting in Staunton’s office. Sidney makes it known that he wants to see Pamela Morton. Mr Morton reveals that his wife is catching the 10:15 train, the same train the Staunton used to take on trips to London. At 10:15 Pamela Morton is on the platform when Staunton’s secretary tries to push her under a train. Geordie saves her and the secretary is arrested for murder.

Sidney had worked out about the secretary’s broken relationship with Staunton from the break up of his relationship with friend Amanda. Amanda used to regularly visit Sidney at Grantchester, but has recently told him she is to marry another.
