This plaque reports that MLK first visited Colorado in 1959. His visit did not generate any press since civil rights was seen as a Southern issue, not a Colorado one. He visited the state five more times between 1959 and 1967, and began to raise the awareness of civil rights as a Colorado issue. King visited Denver in 1964. A 50-year remembrance of the visit may be found at (visit link) . A copy of the letter inviting him to Denver in August of 1964 may be found at (visit link) .
