Steele was a souvereign city from 1578 until the incorporation to the city of Essen in 1929.
The abbess Elisabeth von Manderscheid-Blankenheim gave her seal with three rings to the city.

This impressive coat of arms is located just beside the entrance of Sparkasse Steele (today: Kulturforum).
This building is a monument since 6/8/1989.
