Given its color, this monument can be difficult to read, even the Woodmen emblem on the base. The main inscription appears on the scroll, and it says:
Thomas A. Johnson
Born
May 25, 1868
Died
Aug 30, 1901
Farther down, to the right, the monument is sculpted so as to resemble peeling bark. The epitaph itself is weathered by time and the elements -- "To rest in peace" is the last line -- and it's located "inside" where the bark was. On the flap of bark that peeled away, it says:
Erected
