Anfang des 14 Jhs. wurden die Wehreinrichtungen der Burg massiv verstärkt. Dabei wurde die Siedlung in den erweiterten Befestigungsgürtel eingeschlossen. Dazu wurde auch der hohe Stadtturm erbaut. Er trägt heute ein Walmdach. Wegen seiner Uhr wird er auch Uhrturm genannt.
Der Ort unterstand bis 1848 dem jeweiligen Burgherren.

Auf einem Felskopf erbaute man den Stadtturm, vorgelagert war offenbar ein eigener, isolierter Sitz, von dem heute nur spärliche Mauerreste und Terrassen künden. Von hier aus war über ein Schalentor die untere Vorburg erreichbar, die als schmaler Weg den Sporn begleitete und durch eine weitere Sperrmauer in die obere Vorburg mündete.
